Since 2004 Shaman has produced its unique "Poetry in Action" program. Performing to over 11,800 NSW high-school students in 2008, Shaman highly values its role as the creative mentor for a future of fresh minds - to entertain, challenge and provoke tomorrow's leaders through inspiring poetry performances that can change the way they view artistic expression. This program gives Shaman permanent administrative infrastructure whilst providing self-funded ongoing artistic development for its members.
In 2007 Shaman produced the Australian premiere of UK playwright Dennis Kelly's "Love and Money" at the Old Fitzroy Theatre. With its mix of dark humour, raw emotion and gripping themes the production proved a great success with audiences, box-office and reviewers alike:
"This is a very fine production, exceptionally well cast and performed." - Sun Herald
Shaman followed this up in 2008 with the world premiere of Caleb Lewis' satirical comedy, "Men, Love and the Monkey Boy" at Darlinghurst Theatre Company which then went on to a successful second season at Parramatta Riverside Theatre:
"A shining example of what independent theatre can be. This production is universally enjoyable." - Daily Telegraph
The successful delivery of these projects is due to Shaman's keen eye for a great script and running a fiercely tight ship, making it one of the most organised young production houses in Sydney.
None of this work would have been possible without the financial support of a small number of individuals and businesses with enough passion and insight to see our productions realized. Even the NSW government has come to the party, partially funding "Men, Love and the Monkey Boy" in 2008 and our "Poetry In Action" program in 2009.
